...sports fishing!
sport fishing! Some of the most breath taking scenery ever lies in the Fraser Valley in British Columbia, Canada, and Chilliwack is right in the middle of it... literally! Chilliwack's rivers and lakes showcase steelhead, salmon, trout, and sturgeon fishing throughout the entire year. The various rivers and lakes offer a number of venues that include easy access to alpine hiking or fly-in trips.
Sports fishers seeking the angling thrill of a lifetime will be pleased to know the valley is home to a healthy population of sturgeon. These freshwater behemoths grow up to 450 kilograms (1,000 pounds) and live to be more than 100 years of age. Experienced sports anglers know just how fantastic these creatures are to catch. Sturgeon pull hard and soar out of the water while trying to free themselves. A catch-and-release program is proving to be a great success, increasing the number of sturgeon every year and allowing for research to manage this magnificent fish well into the new millennium.
The
mighty Fraser River... nearly 1,600 kilometers long (1,000 miles), ranks as one of the world's last great salmon-producing rivers. The Fraser River provides an exceptional Chinook fishery beginning in May, and the summer months are popular for huge returns of sockeye. In the Fall, five species of salmon: coho, chum, pink, sockeye, and Chinook return in abundant numbers on the Fraser and several of its productive tributary rivers two of which boast successful hatchery programs.
The Chilliwack-Vedder Rivers...attract sports anglers from all over North America. Anglers will enjoy a fantastic steelhead fishery, and in early summer Chinook begin on the Chilliwack River with coho starting in the late summer. The fall boasts runs of about 100,000 chinook and about 50,000 coho.
The Harrison River... which drains the 61 kilometre (38 mile) long Harrison Lake into the Fraser River and runs clean and beautiful year-round offers salmon, trout and sturgeon fishing.
There are numerous lakes in the area in a variety of sizes offering great sports fishing for trout and Dolly Varden.
